Follow Your Fear!

It’s that time of year again!

As you may recall, last year’s Follow Your Fear Day was a huge success!
It was also where plans for the upcoming graphic series TESTAMENT was first announced:

This year’s event is going to be even bigger! I urge you to come out and support those who have taken the next step in reaching their dream goal (whatever that may be).

In addition, since the impromptu post-show hangout was so much fun last time, we’re having a proper after party this year!
This party is being held at the Film/TV Art Show, in support of the upcoming film, No Boys Allowed. Bring your Follow Your Fear Day ticket stub and receive a half-price beverage!

(And yes, the show will include work by yours truly.)

Follow Your Fear Day is August 24th (that’s THIS Saturday!) at the Tranzac (292 Brunswick Ave). Doors at 7:30, show at 8.

sticker 2See you there!

For those of you wondering where I’ve been, well, the truth is, I tried to leave you.

Specifically, I was going to switch over to another hosting site, but ran into some problems…

Suffice to say, you’re stuck with me for a while.

Over the past year, I’ve been busy. From creating a rough promo poster for the upcoming film “What You Need”:

What You Need poster version 1(Support their IndieGoGo campaign!)

To once again participating in Come As You Are‘s annual Erotic Arts and Crafts Show:

woman on chair v2(sexy!)

And, of course, I’ve been working on my graphic novel, Testament.
(You’re going to have to wait for pictures from that!)

But I’ll be updating fairly regularly from now on, and I promise, if I switch sites, I’ll let you know first.

Ciao for now!

It’s About Damn Time!

Well, it looks like I’ve got some catching up to do.

First of all, terribly sorry for the lack of posts. Many many reasons for this, but I’m sure you won’t care to hear about any of them. Just accept my apologies and promises to do better from now on.

Now, let’s see. What have I been up to?
Well, the Erotic Arts and Crafts show this year was quite fun. It was back in February- I’ll be posting pictures soon.
I created a promotional poster for a very neat-sounding independent Canadian short film that’s right up my alley. It was done for a very nice fellow, and I certainly hope he gets his film project off the ground. If I get any updates, I’ll be sure to share them with you.
But most importantly of all, I have been working on my comic book Testament. Want to learn more?

The official announcement will be on Friday, June 15th, at an event called Follow Your Fear Day.

The inimitable improviser Todd Charron will be performing a one-man show, completely improvised, and has invited others to join in accomplishing something they’ve always wanted to, but were too afraid to fail.

Sign up, if you have a fear of your own to follow, or just come to the show, and support the brave souls who are putting themselves on the line in order to accomplish their dreams.

Hope to see you there!

Hi, All!

Sorry that I haven’t posted here in a while. Been busy.

Made a poster for the most amazing event ever:

Of course, this one turned out to be a little illegible, so I tried again:

But then new information was added, and besides, I didn’t really like the colours.
So I made this:

And then I was tired of making posters.

If I had made a new one, though, it would probably say something like this:

Join RAE and her super-talented friends as they bring you a vaRAEity fundRAEser the likes of which you have never seen!

Well, ahem, anyway…

I’m also donating an original painting to the prize draw. How’s that, huh? Does that sweeten the deal? You can actually win original ART!

Yaray has been doing quite well so far in the Mortal Kombat Kreate A Kharacter Kompetition, but it’s not over yet.

You can tell he's excited.

His creator, Leif Conti-Groome, has come up with such an engrossing concept, and I hope his imagination is rewarded.

I had to do a few sketches before I got it right.

Leif's main idea was clear from the beginning. It just took a few tweaks to get the details right.

Personally, I like how he turned out.

“But this is a Mortal Kombat character,” you’re probably saying. “What are his moves?”

From Leif’s notes:

Lepers repel: Yaray bisects his body and his tendrils hold the opponent up. The camera then splits into two angles each one showing one side of Yaray. His left, balanced side efficiently pulls out the opponent’s right arm and leg. Simultaneously, his chaotic left side starts breaking and dislocating the opponent’s left arm and leg. The camera returns to one shot and the mangled victim hangs off of one of Yaray’s tendrils like a macabre Christmas decoration; the rearranged arm bent backwards and acting like a hook. The opponent is still alive and begins to yell in agony but Yaray promptly snaps their neck. The head now dangles along with the body.

Side-Splitter: Yaray splits open and his tendrils grab his opponent. The victim is dragged face first towards Yaray’s open innards. It looks like the opponent is going to be ingested into this maw. Instead, tendrils start to cover the opponent’s mouth and nose. The stench from Yaray’s wound causes the victim to vomit uncontrollably but since their orifices are blocked, the bile builds up. Eventually there is no more space left in the opponent’s throat and sinuses and the bile pours out their eyes and ears. The vomit is so toxic that it dissolves the opponent’s face. Yaray drops his victim and mugs for the camera.

Since there’s no way I’m drawing that, I’ll just give you my interpretation of Yaray splitting open.

Whatever happens, whether the contest ends in defeat or a Flawless Victory, I certainly hope that this is not that last we’ll see of Yaray.

Next Post:

An update on TESTAMENT!

I can’t wait either.

Mortal Kombat!!!

Do you like Mortal Kombat?

Of course you do. Who doesn’t?

Well, my good friend Leif, who writes a neat video game blog, is entering an online Mortal Kombat forum contest, and a pretty nifty one at that.

The name of the contest? “Kreate a Kharacter”. Of course.

He’s come up with a really interesting character concept, which I had the honour of illustrating.

This is Yaray:

I’m not sure that I speak MK-ish fluently enough to explain or describe the awesomeness of the character, so I suggest heading over to the forum and have a look for yourself. And hey, while you’re there, you could pitch in your member vote.

In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed, because it’d be really cool to come out on top.

I’ll keep you posted!

It’s May 21st. I’m still here, and if you’re reading this, then so are you.

It seems to me, then, that this is the perfect time to finally realize a dream I’ve had since my youth.

I’m publishing a Graphic Novel.

The Story

In late 1800’s England, two brothers, James and William, were born to wealth and privilege. They lived to see the Industrial Revolution, the turn of the century, the beginnings of Modernism and the rise of Science as the new Truth. Despite all of this, however, they remained dreadfully dull. By the time of their deaths, they had accomplished nothing of note, and had in fact failed to even realize that the world at large was suffering something of a spiritual crisis.

For a hundred years they existed in Purgatory, with none but Azrael, the Angel of Death, for company. God, who had his hands full with World Wars and epidemics packing souls into the afterlife, couldn’t decide if the brothers deserved to go up or down. He knew that such tragedy was causing his flock to turn away from their faith, and so, in His wisdom, he decided that it was time for a good old-fashioned miracle.

Present day, and the brothers are back in London with a second chance at life. They know that if they manage to make the best of it this time around, they are guaranteed entrance to Paradise. Unfortunately, the mechanics of bringing them back required a transfusion of Demon blood, making the temptation to indulge in all the fruits that the modern world has to offer at times too much to resist…

The following are a handful of sketches I’ve done over the past decade or so. I’m finalizing my stylistic approach, mixing ink with graphite and charcoal, with coloured pencil and watercolour for the covers. I haven’t figured out all the logistics of self-publishing just yet, but I promise you, I will. Keep checking back here for information on publishing dates.

Over the next little while, I will continue to drop sketches, artwork, and story details into this blog, filling you in on what you can expect when the first chapter is finally available for purchase. I am incredibly excited about this new project, and I hope you are too.

Be well, and don’t let Armageddon sneak up on you.
